Introduction and History¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@¡@
¡@¡@¡@¡@The Tajen University Library was established at the time of the school's
¡@¡@founding in 1966. The library was originally housed on the third floor of the old for more
¡@¡@and better library facilities, the school began planning and construction of the new
¡@¡@Administration and Library Building, which opened in March of 2001. Currently, the Tajen
¡@¡@Institute of Technology Library spans 5 stories, contains over 210,000 volumes of books,
¡@¡@900 periodical titles, and 7,000 units of non-book materials including CD ROMs, electronic
¡@¡@databases, audiocassettes and videos etc.
¡@¡@¡@¡@The new building weighs in at over 10,000 square meters of space, has a total of 550 study
¡@¡@desks, and 800 network connection ports. Recently, the library's hours of operation have been
¡@¡@extended from 65 to 80 hours per week, including Saturdays (the library remains closed on Sunday
¡@¡@and national holidays). In addition to library service and office facilities, the new building
¡@¡@boasts a large number of personal research rooms, several group discussion rooms, a multimedia
¡@¡@room, and special library use training room, use of which is available to all of the Institution's
¡@¡@instructors.
¡@¡@
Administrational Philosophy
¡@¡@¡@¡@At Tajen, we believe that the heart of any academic institution is its library. We consider
¡@¡@our library to be essential to the academic and professional development of our students. As a
¡@¡@result, our library is the most heavily funded of all departments on campus. Currently, our core
¡@¡@collections are: (1) Health; (2) Management; (3) Sports and Recreation Sciences; (4) Social Services.
¡@¡@In addition, the library, along with the Arts Center, has begun a joint effort to increase collection
¡@¡@of humanities materials including literature, history, philosophy, and religion. Our goal is to foster
¡@¡@educational research, and encourage independent and critical thinking among our students by providing
¡@¡@a large volume of educational resources covering a wide range of disciplines.
¡@¡@Administrative Goals:
¡@¡@¡@¡@1.To maintain and increase the circulation of the library's resources and collections.
¡@¡@¡@¡@2.To make more materials available in digital format.
¡@¡@¡@¡@3.To actively seek out and exceed the information and research needs of students and instructors.
¡@¡@¡@¡@4.To foster people's desire to investigate and engage in productive research.
¡@¡@
Architecture and Facilities
¡@¡@¡@¡@The Library's architecture is inspired by the spirit of famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who
¡@¡@believed that a building's furniture should act as a bridge between the facilities and user. To this
¡@¡@end, we have designed our library with lots of space, used natural colors and all natural wood furniture.
¡@¡@In a further effort to integrate the library resources with its facilities, we have integrated numerous
¡@¡@Internet connection ports, allowing easy access to the World Wide Web from virtually anywhere in the
¡@¡@building.

Looking Ahead
¡@¡@¡@¡@We at Tajen embrace the philosophy of, "A book for every reader, and a reader for every book.
¡@¡@" We hope to encourage responsible use of library facilities and resources. Most importantly, we
¡@¡@look forward to and welcome the continued support of students, faculty, and administration. Together,
¡@¡@we are striving to make the Tajen Institute of Technology Library one of Taiwan's top research
¡@¡@facilities.
